Our Process

Superior Processing = Superior Quality

Our process is unlike other leading manufacturers that try to speed up the process of making premium quality coconut substrates by using harsh chemical washes and steaming that destroy naturally occurring beneficial microbial life.

At EMPIRE ORGANICS we have a different idea. Replacing chemical washes and steaming commonly used in the industry with composting and extra washes, many extra washes. First after the selected husks have been soaked in freshwater for 2 weeks they are shredded or chopped and sent to be composted for a minimum of two years. During this composting process the coco is being consistently rinsed with freshwater to lower the EC and tannin content along with stabilizing the PH.

After the composting period is complete the product is super washed with clean freshwater and dried multiple times to lower the EC to almost undetectable levels. Once coco meets analytical requirements it is dried, compressed and packaged. This rigorous process is how we provide the highest quality coconut substrates on the market. All certified organic OMRI Listed.

Ecologically Friendly...
Coco coir is a byproduct of the coconut industry. Coconut husks that use to be burned or trashed are now being turned into one of the worlds finest organic growing mediums.

Use of these products is also saving the diminishing peat bogs that are drying up due to over-consumption of nonrenewable natural resources. Unlike peat, coconut husks are completely renewable and ecologically friendly.

Peat bogs take 10,000 years to form. Peat bogs are valuable wildlife habitats supporting rare and endangered species. Once destroyed they are gone forever. Peat bogs all over the world are under threat.

The coconut husk processing industry also supports the economy and  people of Sri Lanka and is helping to rebuild their economy in the wake of the devastating tsunamis of 2004.
